Fukuoka City has announced that the extension of the Nanakuma Line of the city subway between Tenjin-Minami and Hakata, which is currently under construction, will open in March 2023. The Nanakuma Line opened with service between Tenjin-Minami and Hashimoto in 2005, thereby improving access from the southwestern part of the city Tenjin and the city center. The extension will shorten travel time by 14 minutes as passengers will no longer need to  transfer to the Airport Line at Tenjin. In addition, the Nanakuma Line and Airport Line platforms at Hakata Station will be directly connected by a 150-m underground passageway, making travel to Fukuoka Airport more convenient. The City expects 82,000 passengers per day to use the extension.
